Alaska State Medical Association logo

The Alaska State Medical Association's (ASMA) mission is: 1) to federate and bring into one organization the medical profession of the State of Alaska and to unite with similar medical societies to form the American Medical Association; 2) to advance medical science, to extend medical knowledge, to elevate the standards of medical education and to foster the enactment and enforcement of appropriate medical laws; 3) to promote friendly interchange between physicians; to foster and guard the legitimate interests of members of the medical profession and to protect them against imposition; 4) to enlighten and direct public opinion in regard to the problems of medicine; so that the profession shall become more capable and honorable within itself and more useful to the public in the prevention and treatment of disease and; 5) to charter as affiliates of this corporation subordinate medical societies or associations.



American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery logo

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) was founded in 1964 and represents more than 2,700 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons throughout the world. The AAFPRS is a National Medical Specialty Society of the American Medical Association (AMA). The majority of AAFPRS members and fellows are certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, which includes examination in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures, and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Other AAFPRS members are surgeons certified in ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and dermatology.

The mission of the AAFPRS is to promote the highest quality facial plastic surgery through education, dissemination of professional information, and the establishment of professional standards; to achieve understanding and recognition of the specialty of facial plastic surgery by the medical profession, hospitals, and other medical care entities, legislative and regulatory bodies, and the public at large; to define facial plastic surgery as a specialty that requires intensive training and competence, embodies high ethical standards, artistic ideals, commitment to humanitarian service, and a desire to enhance the quality of human life; to serve as the public's information source on facial plastic surgery; and to assist members in the practice of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, guiding them in the delivery of high quality, cost-effective medicine and surgery.

American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation logo

The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) is a medical specialty society of more than 6,700 physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also called physiatrists. PM&R physicians focus on restoring function. They care for patients with acute and chronic pain and musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain, tendinitis, pinched nerves, and fibromyalgia. They also treat people who have experienced catastrophic events resulting in paraplegia, quadriplegia, or traumatic brain injury and individuals who have strokes, orthopedic injuries, or neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, polio, or ALS.

American Academy of Physician Assistants logo

American Academy of Physician Assistants
Founded in 1968, the Academy works to promote quality, cost-effective health care, and the professional and personal growth of PAs. Today, there are approximately 40,500 PAs in clinical practice, and AAPA is the only national organization to represent physician assistants in all medical and surgical specialties and all work settings in the United States and the federal services.

PAs are licensed health professionals who practice medicine with physicians as a team and deliver a broad range of medical and surgical services to diverse populations in rural and urban settings. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and prescribe medications.

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists logo

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is a professional medical organization with more than 5,200 members in the United States and 84 other countries. Founded in 1991, AACE is dedicated to the optimal care of patients with endocrine problems. AACE initiatives inform the public about endocrine disorders. AACE also conducts continuing education programs for clinical endocrinologists, physicians whose advanced, specialized training enables them to be experts in the care of endocrine diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, growth hormone deficiency, osteoporosis, cholesterol disorders, hypertension and obesity.

American Association of Neurological Surgeons logo

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with nearly 5,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spine, brain, nervous system, and peripheral nerves.



American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine logo

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) represents over 7,000 physicians specializing in occupational and environmental medicine.

Founded in 1916, the ACOEM is the nation's largest medical society dedicated to promoting the health of workers through preventive medicine, clinical care, research, and education. The ACOEM comprises 31 component societies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico whose physician members network and hold scientific meetings on a regular basis.

ACOEM members are knowledgeable and capable of treating job-related diseases, recognizing and resolving workplace hazards, instituting rehabilitation methods, and providing well-managed care. The continual emergence of new chemicals, complex tools, manufacturing methodologies, pollution and environmental impacting activities, and health care reform have focused and mandated the need for trained occupational and environmental medical specialists.



American College of Preventive Medicine logo

The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is the national professional society for physicians committed to disease prevention and health promotion. Founded in 1954, the ACPM is committed to preventing disease and promoting the health of the individual, the community, and the nation.

The ACPM is composed of 2,000 members engaged in preventive medicine practice, teaching, and research. Many members serve on ACPM committees and task forces and represent preventive medicine in national forums, contributing to the organization's role as a major national resource of expertise in disease prevention and health promotion.

Specialists in preventive medicine are uniquely trained in both clinical medicine and public health. They have the skills needed to understand and reduce the risks of disease, disability, and death in individuals and in population groups. You can find physicians trained in preventive medicine working in primary care settings and managed care organizations, in public health and government agencies, in workplaces, and in academia.



American College of Surgeons logo

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 60,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

American Society of Addiction Medicine logo

The nation's medical specialty society dedicated to educating physicians and improving the treatment of individuals suffering from alcoholism or other addictions.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine is an association of physicians dedicated to improving the treatment of alcoholism and other addictions, educating physicians and medical students, promoting research and prevention, and enlightening and informing the medical community and public about these issues. The society serves its members by providing opportunities for education and sharing of experiences, and by promoting the development of a body of professional knowledge and literature to enhance the quality and increase the availability of appropriate health care for people affected by the addictions.

ASAM members are physicians from all medical specialties and subspecialties. They are engaged in private practice, serve as corporate medical directors, and work in group practice or other clinical settings.



American Society of Anesthesiologists logo

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient. Since its founding in 1905, the Society's achievements have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain. As physicians, anesthesiologists are responsible for administering anesthesia to relieve pain and for managing vital life functions, including breathing, heart rhythm and blood pressure, during surgery. After surgery, they maintain the patient in a comfortable state during the recovery, and are involved in the provision of critical care medicine in the intensive care unit.



American Society for Surgery of the Hand logo

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) is comprised of hand, orthopaedic, plastic and general surgeons from around the world (Approximately 1/3 of members are plastic surgeons). The mission of ASSH 'is to advance the science and practice of hand surgery through education, research and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners.

Arkansas Medical Society logo

The Arkansas Medical Society is a voluntary professional association, established in 1875, and represents approximately 4,300 physicians and medical students in all fields of medicine. The Arkansas Medical Society is composed of members of each of the county medical societies and is affiliated with the American Medical Association.

The organization publishes a monthly scientific/socioeconomic journal, hosts educational programs for physicians, and is the accrediting body for organizations offering continuing medical education programs. The Arkansas Medical Society is concerned about all issues affecting health and the delivery of medical care.



Connecticut State Medical Society logo

Since its inception in 1792, the mission of the Connecticut State Medical Society has been to serve both the physicians and citizens of the State of Connecticut. The Society is a federation of eight component medical associations, with a total membership of more than 7,000 physicians. The professional organization and its physician members are dedicated to providing quality health care and health education to Connecticut citizens.

The Society continues to support the mission and speak as one unified voice to preserve the integrity of medicine and the safety of their patients.

Founded in 1916, The Endocrine Society is the world's oldest, largest, and most active organization devoted to research on hormones and the clinical practice of endocrinology. Today, The Endocrine Society's membership consists of more than 13,000 scientists, physicians, educators, nurses and students in more than 80 countries. Iowa Medical Society logo

The Iowa Medical Society (IMS) is the professional association for Iowa MDs and DOs. The core purpose of the IMS is to assure the highest quality of health care in Iowa through our role as physician and patient advocate.

The IMS was established in 1850 in Burlington and has a long history of serving Iowa physicians and their patients.

The IMS exists to advance medical science and promote fair medical laws and regulations in Iowa. IMS also works to protect the health of Iowans through a variety of projects and activities at the state and national levels. Its members include over 4,000 physicians in Iowa.



Kentucky Medical Association logo

The Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) has been the voice of Kentucky physicians since 1851 and is the only state association representing every specialty and type of medical practice in Kentucky. Its 5,000 physician members share a mission of providing quality health care to the citizens of the Commonwealth.

KMA is committed to excellence in the advancement of medical knowledge, the enactment and enforcement of just medical laws and in upholding the highest scientific and ethical standards of the profession. MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society logo

MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, is a professional medical society representing more than 6,000 physicians and over 50 specialties statewide. MedChi's mission is to serve as Maryland's foremost advocate and resource for physicians, their patients and the public's health. MedChi represents physicians from all practice modalities and specialties within the state of Maryland.

MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, was formed to unite the medical profession, promote and disseminate medical knowledge, protect public health interests, and elevate the standards of medical education. The organization continues to actualize its original goals through legislative advocacy, public health programs and the expansion of its membership base.

The purposes of the Massachusetts Medical Society shall be to do all things as may be necessary and appropriate to advance medical knowledge, to develop and maintain the highest professional and ethical standards of medical practice and health care, and to promote medical institutions formed on liberal principles for the health, benefit and welfare of the citizens of the Commonwealth.



Medical Society of Delaware logo

The Medical Society of Delaware (MSD), the third oldest society of its kind in the United States, was incorporated on February 3, 1789. Although much has changed in the medical profession since the inception of MSD, the principle upon which this society of physicians was founded remains steadfast: to further the ideals of the medical profession, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of the citizens of Delaware. We exist to serve our members and, through them, all Delawareans. We do this through advocacy, representation, education, and the advancement of public health and well-being.



Medical Society of the District of Columbia

The Medical Society of the District of Columbia (MSDC) is part of the federation of state, county and specialty medical societies that make up the American Medical Association. Founded in 1817 and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1819, MSDC has approximately 2,500 physician and medical student members.

From the beginning, MSDC has been a major player in the city's health arena. Early on, the medical society was active in the improvement of the District's water supply and fought to control contagious diseases. By the 1960s, MSDC was helping to eliminate polio and improving standards for the licensing of nursing homes. In the 1990s, MSDC supported legislation requiring health care for the District's uninsured, spearheaded a campaign to vaccinate infants, and created the AIDS Task Force.

MSDC continues to advocate for physicians and their patients, most recently leading legislative efforts to allow physicians to negotiate certain terms and conditions of health plan contracts with health care providers without fear of reprisals under federal antitrust laws.

MSDC publishes the newsletter, MSDC Newsline, which includes timely news on medical society activities and DC-area health care information. Report on Medical Economics frequently accompanies Newsline. It provides current information on changes in policies and regulations of third party payers, including Medicaid and Medicare.

Mission: The Medical Society of the District of Columbia is dedicated to the well being of physicians in metropolitan Washington and their patients. We advocate on behalf of our member physicians of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds; we promote high standards of character and professionalism; and we ensure that physicians are-and are recognized as-the primary professionals who define and guarantee high-quality, appropriate, and cost-effective medical care. Above all, we aggressively defend the highest principle of all-the integrity of the physician-patient relationship.

Founded in 1766, the mission of the Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ) is to promote the betterment of the public health and the science and the art of medicine, to enlighten public opinion in regard to the problems of medicine, and to safeguard the rights of the practitioners of medicine.



Medical Society of Virginia logo

The Medical Society of Virginia, also known as MSV, is a professional association of more than 7,200 physicians practicing in Virginia. Founded in December 1820 and incorporated in 1824, this organization represents both medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy of all specialties and practice settings in Virginia.

Dedicated to Virginia's physicians and their patients, the MSV provides administrative, membership, legislative and legal services to its members, produces a monthly publication, and administers a recovery and monitoring program for impaired physicians. The MSV sponsors and accredits continuing medical education for physicians and serves as the liaison between local, national, and specialty medical organizations.

The Medical Society of Virginia is responsible for the creation of the State Board of Health, the State Board of Medical Examiners, the Board of Medicine, the MSV Review Organization (which has evolved into the Virginia Health Quality Center), and the Virginia's Physicians Network, a 100-percent physician-owned HMO. Each of these now independent entities originated within the Medical Society of Virginia.

Today, the Medical Society of Virginia leads the way in advocating for patient protection in the current managed care environment, for access to health care for all Virginians, and for the highest standards of health care quality.



Michigan State Medical Society logo

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) is the professional source for all licensed Michigan physicians and is currently composed of 14,000 members. Founded in 1866, one of its initial projects was the establishment of a state public health department, created in 1873.

All MSMS physician services are dedicated to providing quality health care for all Michigan citizens. Presently, MSMS core services focus on legislative leadership within the state, as well as patient and physician advocacy.



Mississippi State Medical Association logo

The Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) is a professional membership organization of Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathy and medical students in Mississippi. The MSMA serves as an advocate for its members, their patients, and the public health. The association promotes ethical, educational, and clinical standards for the medical profession and the enactment of just medical laws.

The MSMA provides governmental and private sector advocacy services for its member physicians, in addition to providing numerous other personal and professional medical practice services and benefits. Founded in 1856, the MSMA provides a way for members of the medical profession to unite and act on matters affecting public health and the practice of medicine.

The Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) is the voice of more than 5,000 Missouri physicians and patients in legislative and advocacy efforts at the Missouri State Capitol, Department of Health, Department of Insurance, Medicaid, and the Board of Healing Arts. The mission of the MSMA is to serve its members through promotion of the science and art of medicine, protection of the health of the public and betterment of the medical profession in Missouri.



Montana Medical Association logo

The Montana Medical Association (MMA) is the professional society of doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathy in the State of Montana which has as its purpose the promotion of the art and science of medicine and the protection of the health of the citizens of the State. The MMA speaks in both the private and public sector as the voice of physicians and represents their interests in all areas of concern towards continuing quality health care in Montana.

The MMA was founded in 1879, incorporated in 1952, and is comprised of 16 county medical societies from across the State. The Association provides many programs and benefits for members and administers several programs of interest to physicians. The goal of protecting and promoting the patient-physician relationship is of paramount concern.



The National Pain Foundation logo

The National Pain Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1998 to advance functional recovery of people in pain through information and education. It is built on the belief that proper treatment of pain conditions at any stage can positively change the direction of a person's life. Our mission is to be a credible and highly effective resource to empower all persons in pain, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or economic or social status, to improve their lives through education, advocacy, communication networks and community participation. The methods for achieving our mission are as follows:

  • Linking people in pain to resources
  • Linking resources to people in pain
The NPF is committed to educating persons in pain and their families about pain conditions, providing information about the options available for managing their pain, and encouraging them to take a more active role in their treatment plan through its interactive, peer-reviewed web site, www.NationalPainFoundation.org. The NPF updates its site monthly with relevant information regarding medications and treatment options, complementary therapies, health and wellness, family and emotional issues related to chronic pain, and stories of those who are triumphing over pain.

New Hampshire Medical Society logo

The New Hampshire Medical Society (NHMS) was founded in 1791 to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The mission of the Medical Society has broadened to include the promotion of optimum health and a healthy lifestyle by such measures as physical exercise, proper nutrition, and elimination of substance abuse. NHMS strives to keep the public well-informed, in an objective scientific manner, of environmental public health dangers such as hazardous wastes and harmful food additives, as well as alternate methods of delivering health care. NHMS represents the public's interest in health matters by supporting peer review at all levels and by supporting a strong and effective State Board of Medicine.

NHMS promotes and encourages the professional and economic independence of all physicians so they can serve as true patient advocates. The society works to represent the interests of its 2,000 physician members through its active participation in the legislative process at all levels of government.



North Dakota Medical Association logo

Founded in 1887, the North Dakota Medical Association (NDMA) is the professional membership association for active and retired physicians, residents, medical students, and allied health professionals in North Dakota. The NDMA membership is comprised of more than 1,100 members who represent all medical specialties and all practice settings in the state.

The mission of the Association is to promote the health and well-being of the citizens of North Dakota and to provide leadership to the medical community.

Renal Physicians Association (RPA)*... the Advocate for Excellence in Nephrology Practice! Leading Nephrologists to the future, the RPA represents and serves nephrologists and their practice managers in their pursuit and delivery of quality renal health care.

The RPA is recognized by national leaders as the organization that sets the standards for delivering value and accountability for quality renal patient care. RPA serves as an influential advocate for physicians and their patients, and is the only association whose purpose is to improve the socio-economic conditions for the practice of nephrology.

* Only RPA members may display the RPA logo. The logo symbolizes the commitment to excellence in nephrology through continuous quality improvement (CQI) and physician accountability.



Rhode Island Medical Society logo

The Rhode Island Medical Society (RIMS) is the non-profit professional membership organization that serves all Rhode Island physicians, regardless of their medical specialty, practice setting, institutional affiliation or geographic location. The Society was founded in 1812 to advance the art and science of medicine and to promote public health. Today the Society is proud to include physician assistants and medical students among its members.

First and foremost, the Society is an advocate for physicians and their patients in public and private forums both locally and nationally. RIMS stands for access to quality care and the integrity of the patient-doctor relationship. The Society strives to improve the environment of medical practice through enlightened public policy and fair market practices. It serves the pubic and the profession of medicine as an educational resource and as a mainstay of professional standards.

RIMS pursues its mission through numerous committees of uncompensated volunteer physicians and through affiliated entities, which include the Rhode Island Medical Society Foundation, Rhode Island Quality Partners, the Rhode Island Medical Political Action Committee, and the Rhode Island Medical Society Insurance Brokerage Corporation. The Society takes pride in its productive relationships with medical specialty organizations, the American Medical Association, and the professional association of other health care professionals.

South Carolina Medical Association logo

Established in 1848, the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) is the voice of the medical profession in the state. Our purpose is to support the efforts of South Carolina physicians, to provide quality medical care, and promote good health for all citizens of the state. The SCMA also represents and serves the interests of those physicians.

The current association developed out of the Medical Society of South Carolina, which had been established in 1789 in Charleston. Today, 46 county and 27 specialty medical societies and the component units for house staff and students provide the membership for the statewide organization. The association has four subsidiaries, Members' Insurance Trust, Physicians Care Network, SCMA Foundation, SCMA Financial Services, Inc., and SCMA Practice Management Services, Inc.



South Dakota State Medical Association logo

The South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA) is devoted to promoting the art and science of medicine, to protecting and improving the health of the public and to providing leadership and advocacy in the field of quality health care.



Tennessee Medical Association logo

The Tennessee Medical Association is a 6,800-member professional organization for medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy dedicated to protecting the health care interests of patients and enhancing the effectiveness of physicians throughout the state.



Texas Medical Association logo

Texas Medical Association is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 39,500 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA's key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans. Vermont Medical Society logo

The Vermont Medical Society (VMS) represents and advocates for physicians, medical students, and residents who live and work in Vermont. Along with providing assistance, information, and lobbying services on legislative and regulatory matters, the Society offers a host of personal and professional services on non-clinical matters including contract review, coding and compliance advice, individual technical assistance, and a wide range of insurance and health programs for members and their employees. VMS is committed to serving the needs of Vermont physicians and their patients through appropriate programs and services.

The Wisconsin Medical Society, established in 1841, is the first and largest physician and patient advocacy association in the state, representing more than 9,000 member physicians and their patients.
